About us
Reading rain is not about the raindrops themselves, but about understanding how rain forms, moves, and lingers across the land. It is a force that shapes topography, ecosystems, and daily life. By observing its paths and rhythms, we see how it affects humidity, water flow, and seasonal cycles—nourishing plants, animals, and people. Rain also cultivates food, culture and local memories. In this way, “reading rain” becomes a way to observe nature and to reframe the relationship between humans and the environment.

The Culture of Rain in Taiwan
Rain in Taiwan is more than just a climate phenomenon; it is deeply intertwined with local culture and life memories. From the long, windward rains in the north to the monsoon-dependent rainfall rhythms in the south, different regions have developed unique industries, cuisines, and religious activities due to rain. Rain influences the agricultural seasons and shapes festivals and local landscapes.

We hope to move beyond fragmented experiences of rain into a coherent environmental context, allowing viewers to see how the interaction between rain and landforms creates regional differences, and to further understand how humid conditions shape plants, animals, diets, and local life.

Centering on Taiwan's orographic rainfall, the work categorizes six main types of rain: northeast monsoon windward slope rain, Meiyu front orographically enhanced rain, southwest monsoon mountain torrential rain, tropical cyclone orographic torrential rain, valley convection rain, and cloud and fog drizzle. It explains how rain is generated through the interaction of monsoons, fronts, typhoons, and mountain topography.

Rainy City
We focus from natural topography to the spaces where people live, observing how rain enters cities and alters daily landscapes. In Taiwan's various counties and cities, rainfall not only affects climate and the environment but also shapes streets, buildings, and the rhythm of life.

Taiwan's Rainwater Culture
The Taiwan Rain Culture Fold-Out Page unfolds to connect the memories of rain in various counties and cities: using the rain culture of each county and city as the main theme, combined with representative festivals or beliefs, it transforms "rain" into a readable scroll of the island.

"Rainwater Nourishes All Things" begins with rainwater, tracing how it seeps into the soil, nourishes crops, nurtures life, and shapes local food and lifestyle culture. This special feature uses Taiwan's rain-nurtured natural products as its starting point, connecting plants, ecology, agriculture, and food to reveal that all things do not exist independently, but are interdependent through the continuous cycle and nourishment of rainwater.

These Rain Nourishes cards turn Taiwan’s rain into a collectible index. Each card pairs rain landscapes with rain-nurtured species, crops, and food culture, labeled in Chinese and English. Scan the QR for extended stories and sources. Edge color stripsmap the chapters and form flowing “rain lines”when displayed together.

Book box and cover
Reading the Rain turns rain into a language—shaping land, city, and life. Droplets texture the covers; a misty slipcase protects and displays the set.

This book's design centers on the concept of rain integrating the three volumes into a visual narrative publication.
